We are just back from an epic fishing adventure. I've got thorns stuck in my clothes, my boots are full of salt water and I am smiling whilst I type this blog. I wanted to share this blog with you as it's a funny story but ultimately it's an advert always to try and fish with a partner as sometimes it just clicks and it's so good to share the story with a good friend. We decided to venture out even though there was a SE 30kt wind and if I'm honest I wasn't keen. We arrived at our intended venue only to find it was very weedy and the wind was too strong. When your cap gets blown off your head it's time to move especially whilst lure fishing for bass.
As we walked back up the cliff and I must admit "I moaned a little" we decided to see if we could get more cover from the wind. This is the first example of why you should go fishing with a mate as I would have easily got in the car and driven home. We then chatted a little more while walking around the coastline and discovered a much calmer spot, protected from the wind and swell. My mate said to me here we go this is the path (from his memory 5 years ago) and down we went, wading through ferns and trees. It was horrendous and no human had walked down there for years and once again it takes two to take a path like that but once again we were up against it as we just couldn't find a path down to the waterside to get a lure wet so back up we went and had to take a breather when we got to the top as it was mega steep.
We agreed to still try and we then took another path down but we knew this time it would be easier but we would have to deal with a slight swell from the SE so down we went and what happened next was so fast but fantastic just the same. We started fishing the third venue and had about 10-15 casts and I first thought it just may be one of those days. Cast after cast and nothing so I decided to switch to something brighter as the water was very cloudy but still no good so it was time for my coffee from a Cornish Roastery called Yallah (House Blend) and it was delicious and hot. I do love my coffee. Sometimes taking a breather does allow you to gain a little focus.
Once again learning from this week things changed it was down to another game-changing lure again. I clipped on one of our 140mm Snow White Soft Plastic lures and cast into the direction that the swell was coming from and instantly I screamed over to my mate "Yeh Buddy' I'm in" I navigated the 50cm bass up over the rocks and we were off the mark.
Straight after this bass was caught my mate said to me "You got another one of those in your bag" and I said sure have, help yourself mate. Another good reason to go fishing with a mate. Instantly he copied the same retrieve with the same lure and bang he was into a bass but this time this one took lots of line. He knew he was into a much bigger fish and again navigated it onto the rocks, I held his rod whilst he climbed down and hand-lifted it up to a safe place. Two is better than one.
I was chuffed to bits for him as he struggled the other day when I was catching all the fish. The picture says it all.
So we cast the same lure out again and it was my turn for bass but this time it wasn't that big so back it went and as soon as it went splash my mate was in once again with the bass taking the lure right under his feet. It was another stonker and up it came once again with me holding the rod and him lifting the big girl over the rocks to safety. All our bass today were caught on our open water combo’s.
Steve was on fire and once again a grip and grin for the memories.
At this point, the tide was pushing up and we got caught a few times by the big swell lapping up onto the rocks and didn't realise that the spot we were in was a low water mark and we were about to get cut off if we didn't move quickly so, unfortunately, we had to move but once again it was good that there was two of us because one person in that moment fishing by himself hooking into such good fish could have easily have missed looking back and realising that they might be in a spot of bother if cut off from the shore.
Up we climbed high enough to gain safety and we decided to just take a moment and just stop what we were doing and take all that had happened in. It was one of those moments where two good mates just look out to sea and laugh together and absorb what has just happened. This picture says it all and why you should always go fishing with mates if you can.
After gutting and decaling one of them we then realised why this particular lure worked for us so well. "Match the hatch"
